Different strokes

My 5 year old daughter, the brat, often comes up with very imaginative drawings, and almost always weaves a story around these drawings. It is really interesting to see her do this. These days, I’m often left wondering, if there is something I should be doing to hone these skills. Well, we encourage her to draw and paint. There is a variety of options available for her to choose from, like crayons, chalks, sketch pens, glitter pens, paints. And she uses all of these.

Now, like I said, I have been wondering if it is time to send the brat to drawing/ painting classes. But the issue is, I really don’t want the instructor holding back her imagination. The drawing classes I have seen so far, give little scope for free expression. I have a strong belief in the school of thought that, drawing and colours are a portrayal of one’s true self, his/ her state of mind and wandering thoughts. So, for me an art class should teach the child, technical aspects of art, mixing, proportions, dimensions, etc, while not restricting the child’s imagination.

Does any of you know a teacher like that. I really don’t mind taking her anywhere in town, provided the instructor is really good. So, anywhere in Mumbai is okay with me.
